Fat Metabolism Testing now available at PhysioWISE. 1. What does your fat reading mean? 2. Why PhysioWISE is interested in Fat Metabolism 3. Why the hype on LOW CARB? 4. What are ketones? What does your fat reading mean? When we refer to losing weight, we are typically aiming to lose the excess fat in our body. In other words, we are aiming to burn our stored fat as opposed to burning glucose in the body. You are considered to be in “ketosis” when your body has enough ketones circulating for you to use as energy instead of glucose. ©sidelnikov – Can Stock Photo Inc. It is usually helpful to measure ketones when you first begin a diet or start a weight loss programme. Different people require different levels of carbohydrates and proteins in order to move into nutritional ketosis. A baseline measurement gives you a reading to compare with changes over time. It allows you to check if you are on the right track or whether you need to tweak your programme. Tracking your ketosis levels may assist in troubleshooting your diet, for example if your weight loss starts to stall. There is currently some controversy in the research depending on which expert you follow. If...

Learn MoreThanks to the great work that our physios did at the Judo National Training Camp at the AIS in Canberra in July, PhysioWISE has been recognised as a preferred provider for therapy services for all Combat Sports athletes with the AIS. The national training camp brought together the top Judo players from around the country along with some international players from New Zealand, Japan and Brazil. The athletes learnt new techniques from international experts brought in specifically for this camp, undertook task-specific training and of course there was a lot of practice of the techniques and sparring in general. The physios, which included a team from Brisbane along with our PhysioWISE therapists, were kept very busy throughout the week-long camp with numerous training injuries to attend to as well as a few long term issues that some of the players brought into the camp. Whilst we already look after a number of elite athletes, this preferred provider status from the AIS is a nice recognition of the wonderful work our physios do on a daily basis with all athletes – amateur or professional, elite or...

Learn MorePhysioWISE Director Thuy Bridges presented at the Australian Physiotherapy Association annual conference on 19th October 2013. At the request of the Animal Physiotherapy group, Thuy presented at a breakfast session highlighting how Kinesio Tape can be utilised to effect changes on both humans and animals. No animals were allowed in the venue, so Thuy had to call upon the humans in the audience to demonstrate the Kinesio Taping techniques! Thanks to Karen (one of the delegates enjoying her breakfast at the time) for donating her rotator cuff issue for Thuy to use as a live demonstration. By taping Karen’s problematic deltoid, Thuy managed to increase her strength and eliminate the pain that Karen was feeling through everyday movements. Elsevier (the international book publishers) then asked Thuy to do some live demonstrations from their stand in the trade show area of the conference and many more physios were able to experience first-hand the sort of results that our loyal PhysioWISE clients receive every...
Learn MorePhysioWISE Director Thuy Bridges was asked to present at the Association of Massage Therapists’ annual conference in October 2013. As an Anatomy Trains Associate Teacher she conducted a full day pre-conference workshop which highlighted to the participants the links between different muscles that lie along the Superficial Back Line. Thuy also demonstrated treatment techniques that she utilises in the PhysioWISE clinics with great effect. Then it was time to put on her Certified Kinesio Taping Instructor hat and present a half-day workshop covering the basics of Kinesio Taping along with demonstrations showing how instantaneous results can be obtained when you know how to use Kinesio Tape properly. It was a fantastic conference – with many other great presenters conducting a range of lectures and workshops over the three days. It was also great to see what a switched on bunch of therapists the conference delegates were. Massage therapy in Australia is in good hands if the AMT conference is anything to go...
